A Quick Watering Guide for Your Lawn, Trees, Shrubs, Flowers and Vegetables
How much should you water? It varies on the type of soil, the climate, and the type of plants you're watering.
Here's a guide:
Soil Type
- Clay: absorbs water slowly, high water holding capacity
- Loam: absorbs water moderately, medium water holding capacity
- Sand: absorbs water quickly, low water holding capacity
Established Lawns
- Clay: 1" in two applications, slowly, once a week
- Loam & Sand: 1", slowly, every 5 to 10 days
In hot and dry climates, double the watering frequency and/or applications.
Newly Seeded Lawns
- Clay: Water until run off once a day
- Loam & Sand: water until run off three times a day
In hot and dry climates, double the watering frequency and/or applications.
Trees and Shrubs
- Clay: 1/2" two times (morning and night), once a week
- Loam & Sand: 1", slowly, every 7 to 10 days
In hot and dry climates, double the watering frequency and/or applications.
Flowers
- Clay: 1/4" to 1/2" every three to four days
- Loam/Sand: 1/4" to 1/2" every three to seven days
In hot and dry climates, double the watering frequency and/or applications.
Vegetables
- Clay/Loam/Sand: young plants to a depth of 4" once or twice a week,
mature plants to a depth of 12" twice a week
In hot and dry climates, double the watering frequency and/or applications.
